Zanzibar crosses the one million tourist milestone in 2025: a record year
A spectacular growth in international arrivals
The year 2025 will go down in the history of Zanzibar's tourism. The archipelago recorded 917,167 international arrivals, a remarkable 25% increase compared to the previous year. This figure puts Zanzibar on the doorstep of the symbolic one million tourist mark, a long-sought goal by local authorities that is now within reach.
This momentum can be attributed to several converging factors: an increase in direct air links to Abeid Amani Karume Airport, promotional campaigns targeting European and Middle Eastern markets, and the island's growing reputation as an upscale beach destination. International tour operators have expanded their offerings, making Zanzibar more accessible than ever.
Record revenue and an exceptional December
The economic benefits match the visitor numbers. Tourism revenue reached US$1.1 billion in 2025, an unprecedented amount that confirms the growing importance of the sector in the archipelago's economy. Tourism now represents Zanzibar's primary source of foreign currency.
December 2025 was particularly telling of this trend. With 100,729 visitors welcomed during this single period, the island achieved a bed occupancy rate of 89%, with over 815,000 bed nights recorded. These figures reflect an exceptional peak season, driven by year-end holidays and an influx of travelers seeking winter sun.
Promising prospects for 2026
Buoyed by these results, Zanzibar enters 2026 with great ambition. Tourism authorities are working on improving airport and hotel infrastructure to absorb the growing demand. The goal of one million annual tourists now seems achievable this very year, which would firmly position the archipelago among the continent's major destinations. Diversifying the offer through ecotourism and cultural tourism development should help maintain this upward trajectory while preserving the unique appeal of the Spice Island.
